Habitat for Humanity India, its local partners and Dow India have handed over three water treatment plants to families in coastal communities in Tamil Nadu state. Funded by Dow India, the plants are set up in the villages of Eraviputhenthurai, Thangammalpuram and Periyasamipuram. Nearly 1,600 families will now have access to five to 15 litres of safe water per family per day. “It is a proud day for us at Habitat for Humanity, to witness the completion of our vision to provide these three villages with clean drinking water, a commodity very scarce in the state of Tamil Nadu. We are certain that this will ensure the reduction of waterborne diseases and improve the quality of life. I would also like to thank our local partners and Dow India for supporting this project,” said Dino L. Touthang, HFH India’s CEO. HFH India’s local partners in the project are Evangelical Social Action Forum and People Action for Development.

Jacqueline Fernandez a well known Bollywood star and all Women IndiaBUILDS members of Habitat for Humanity along with their specially invited delegates made their presence felt by participating in the event to promote it. The event, open for all was a great success and attracted a lot of attention by the patrons and media.

Habitat for Humanity India works towards providing shelter and assisting women and families of lower income groups with building homes for themselves. On 3rd October along with the above event Habitat for Humanity India also celebrated the Hard Hat Day. This event was designed to create further awareness of the cause.

At the event the Habitat for Humanity made arrangements to create a temporary rural house. For which all the material required like bricks, tiles, doors, roof and window etc. was available in the Mall. The patrons visiting the mall were invited to voluntarily contribute and complete the home by purchasing the construction material and actually placing it in the house them self.

The Palladium on its first anniversary celebration has already pledged 1% proceedings from Palladium Anniversary day’s sale to Habitat For Humanity India, at a ceremony hosted at The Atrium of Palladium on Saturday 25th September 2010. Ms Shobhaa De humbly received the cheque from Mr Rajendra Kalkar, Centre Director Palladium,  on behalf of Habitat For Humanity.

Habitat DreamBUILDERS

Mr.Prakash Challa, Vice President - CREDAI National & Mr. Nandakumar, Managing Director - Devinarayan Housing and Property Development joined by other CREDAI member organizations in passing concrete -mix

Mr. Ramesh Reddy, Managing Director - Chaitanya Builders and Mr.G.V. Prasad, Chief Operating Officer - L&T South City Projects, laying bricks of hope

In southern India, corporate leaders from the real-estate industry helped build Habitat homes in Thiruvallur district as part of Habitat DreamBUILDERS initiative. The initiative was launched by the Habitat Resource Center in Chennai together with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India(CREDAI), Tamil Nadu which represents private-sector developers.During the course of the build, Mr. PrakashChalla (Vice President – CREDAI National / Managing Director- SSPDL) said “Though we are always hard-pressed on time, we are extremely glad that many of us have been able to set aside a day to get involved in serving marginalised families direly in need of safe and decent homes. We are glad that today our reflection of World Habitat Day and solidarity to the cause, took the form of an active demonstration - of hard physical labour rather than an armchair lecture. We are also proud of our participant members who have been able to join us along in this unique initiative with Habitat for Humanity India.” Mr. Chitty Babu, President - CREDAI Tamil Nadu / Chairman & CEO – Akshaya homes, said “we are glad to lend a helping hand to families who want to help themselves. It is our pleasure to par tner with Habitat for Humanity India on this occasion of World Habitat Day to de monstrate our solidarity to the cause of adequate shelter for al l.”

It‘s about meaning fully giving back to society, while at the same time, it‘s getting back to basics, said Mr. Nandakumar, Managing Director – Devinarayan Housing and Property Development. Altogether, three low-income families benefitted from the free unskilled labour contributions of the CEOs/MDs. The sheer demand of hard physical labour under blistering heat had left many enervated. However, as the day came to a close with the last pan of concrete mix being poured to complete a sec tion of the plinth-beam, a deep sense of satisfaction and smile came over flushed faces, with great cheers, claps and handshakes for a job a ccomplished and the dignity of labour but more importantly the difference it had made to the families.

We Invite each one of you to wear a "Hard Hat & Build" with Habitat for Humanity

Wear a hard hat and remember families and children who live in poverty housing and are in need of safe, decent, and affordable shelter.

The hard hat is a symbolic representation of building and construction activities that go into creating a safe, decent and affordable home for those in need of adequate shelter. Hard hats and homes also symbolize protection -- during the construction process and the protection that a decent home provides for a family. Protection is typically manifested in better security, health, education, sanitation and economic opportunities.

Hard hats are symbolic of the mission and work of Habitat for Humanity - A world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Adequate shelter elevates the health, social, educational and economic living standards of families.

Wearing a hard hat signifies that you believe in a world where everyone should have a decent place to live and is doing something about it.

Your contribution to the Hard Hats for Habitat campaign goes to supporting the mission and work of Habitat for Humanity to empower low-income families by building and rehabilitating simple, decent, affordable houses.

JonathanTM Reckford, CEO, HFH International with Mrs. Rajashree Birla

Habitat for Humanity International’s chief executive officer Jonathan Reckford ended his four-country tour of Asia on 20th August. His trip to the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand and two cities in India – Mumbai and Bangalore – took in visits to project sites, meetings with corporate supporters, government and non-governmental organization partners, volunteers, journalists and staff.

In Bangalore the CEO along with  business leaders, volunteers and homepartner families built homes for the poor. In Mumbai, he addressed a gathering of CEOs at a function organized by the FICCI Aditya Birla CSR Centre for Excellence.

Reckford pointed out that corporations often started partnering with Habitat to improve their public image, but soon found that being perceived as a good corporate citizen attracted and retained staff, especially young people who wanted to work in businesses which contributed to the communities in which they operated.

Throughout the trip, Reckford spoke to local journalists about recent developments in Habitat for Humanity. There was also media interest in how his career had taken him from Wall Street to corporations to church management and finally to Habitat.
